Microplastics

Monitoring of microplastics in atmospheric deposition in the Ria Formosa Natural Park

The goal of this project is to monitor the type and abundance of microplastics in the atmospheric deposition in the Ria Formosa Natural Park, in southern Portugal.

Plastic production, use and discard into the environment have increased exponentially since the 1980s, becoming now a pollutant of major concern.

It is found everywhere, such as in plastic bags, clothing, packaging or even cosmetics.

WHAT ARE MICROPLASTICS?

After use, we don't think about the destiny of plastic... but it usually ends up in land and oceans, fracturing into smaller parts.

Microplastics are these small plastic particles sized from 1µm to 5mm. In the aquatic environment, they can be ingested by organisms from phytoplankton and all along the food chain. They can also affect humans!

Their effect depend on their abundance, size, shape and polymer type. They can cause harm, and even death.

Let's have an overview of my experience working with microplastics in the Ria Formosa Natural Park!
